The Apple AirTags aren't inexpensive, and they don't come with an adapter like a keychain to keep the tracker from getting lost. Some people, however, have discovered a way to avoid purchasing an accessory by punching a hole through the AirTag. People are drilling holes in the plastic outer ring of the AirTag so that a string or a keychain ring can pass through.

The pictures of an AirTag with a hole appeared in the MacRumors forums, where a member named smythey had drilled a very unsightly hole. In reality, one should avoid drilling a hole in the AirTag because doing so can void the warranty.

You might not want to try this yourself, though. You can do "serious damage" to an AirTag if you drill in the wrong spot, and any hole unsurprisingly kills water resistance. This is more proof that Apple could have added a hole (albeit a small one) if it wanted.

The initial dismantling also demonstrates how effective AirTags are in comparison to their competitors. Whereas the Tile Mate and Samsung's Galaxy SmartTag have traditional (if tiny) circuit boards with plenty of unused space, Apple crams the computing power of its tracker into a ring-shaped design that still allows for a replaceable battery.
